Facilitators at Zone 0 welcome participants to the African Digital Reality Walk at FIFAfrica26.

Butter Box and Orbot attend FIFAfrica 2026

From September 28 through October 1, the Guardian Project had the pleasure of attending the 13th edition of the Forum on Internet freedom in Africa (FIFAfrica) 2026 in beautiful Mauritius. Organized and hosted annually by the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA), FIFAfrica is one of Africa’s largest and most important digital rights conferences. The event brought together government officials, politicians, lawyers, human rights activists, grassroots organizations, minority groups, internet governance and tool developer teams to discuss digital and human rights issues impacting Africa.

This year, Butter Box briefly (and covertly) took over the Global Gathering 2026 physical space with a fun, interactive community stress test!

The Butter Box and Engine Room teams joined forces at the Digital Mayan Fair 2026 in Chiapas, México, and we showed up with a clear misión: run guided usability tests with Mayan community members, gather firsthand feedback, and deploy Butter kits with selected candidates ready to close the digital divide in their communities.
